Summer Food Program (SFSP)

Overview

Food That’s In When School is Out!

The need for healthy nutrition does not end when school lets out for the summer. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) fills that gap by providing good, nutritious food that’s “in” when school is “out”. It ensures that children ages 18 years or younger, in low-income areas, can continue to receive nutritious meals during school vacations.

Description

Through the SFSP children may receive up to 2 meals, one meal and a snack, or 2 snacks every day. SFSP is the single largest federally funded program available for sponsors who can combine a feeding program with a summer activity program. The program is funded through the USDA and administered by the State of Nevada Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Division.

Sponsors can be public or private schools, government entities, private nonprofit organizations, public or private nonprofit camps, public or private nonprofit universities or colleges, or community and faith-based organizations. Feeding sites may be at a school, recreation center, playground, faith-based organization, community center, day camp, residential summer camp, housing projects, migrant camps, or on Indian reservations.

To speak with the Nevada SFSP coordinator and learn more about the Summer Food Service Program you may email fnd@agri.nv.gov. You can find out if your community already participates in SFSP or if there is a need for a sponsor in your area and how you can help.

How you may participate in SFSP

Contact the SFSP Consultant to apply as a sponsor. We will provide sponsor training and guide you through the application process to become a sponsor. If you do not feel ready to be a SFSP Sponsor, but would still like to participate, you may want to volunteer at an existing site. Check Food and Nutrition Staff Listing for SFSP Consultant's information.
